Below the Mountains by Jean Bennett

Below the Mountains is great! Amy McDonald and her family have joined her Dad who is working on the Milford Road during the depression years of 1935-1936. This story is in diary format and in it Amy describes the life many New Zealanders experienced in Public Works Department camps during this period.

This story is suitable for readers from 10 years of age. It is written in an observant, no frills manner and provides an honest account of hard working people who helped to shape our country under dreadful conditions. It includes historical notes and photographs. I found it fascinating to learn more about the depression and this part of the country. I recommend it.
