This is a good read for children who like fairytales or a good plot. Characterization is light hearted. The language and play on modern vocabulary is funny and clever, for example pigeon post is called p-mail. The troll, Edric is related to Mrs Malaprop, must be. The author mixes proverbs in his mouth for our entertainment.
Christian is found by Edric in the forest and raised by him after the young Christian threatens to say he was kidnapped by Edric if he returns him to his family. He has a childhood that would appeal to many readers. There is a love story and a tiny taste of magic for those who like that. The description of the cave in which they lived appealed to me. It is simple , colourful and wonderful. Two unusual dogs, Cate and Bub are part of this woodland family. Their full names are Beelzebub and Hecate. When he grows up Chris spends a lot of time watching the princess over the river through his telescope. As manhood approaches she absorbs him. p-post brings them together and the story becomes complicated and I won't spoil it for you.
It is better than a fairytale. Enjoyable and light.

Loved this book - Ferris takes fairytale stereotypes and gives them a new "contemporary" twist.
