An underground prison. A singing giant. A prisoner's daughter. A lizard that burns. A secret cave in the heart of the mountain. A boy growing up just like his father.
Rye's family move to the island colony because his father has been made Governer - a big promotion for him. There are some things that are of little surprise to him - the rain, the warmth, the metal-box houses. Other things take him by surprise - the lizards that burn when you touch them, the secret caves, the 'outlanders' with their gods and magic. And all the time people keep telling him how much like his father he is, something that soon causes him internal strife. He befriends Kris, an island boy, and Stephanie, a prisoner's daughter. Together they explore the island, trying to find out it's secrets, some of which, when found, Rye would sooner not know. Then disaster strikes and Rye discovers that being like his father may not be such a bad thing after all.
This story was quite unpredictable, something I enjoyed. The way it all linked together in the end was quite satisfying. A good read.
