A Book I Couldn't Put Down!
The author reaches into her own childhood experiences to tell this realistic story about the conflicts, struggles and courage of Rosemary Patterson, a sixth grade African-American girl.
In 1954, the town of Missouri acts upon the Supreme Court ruling of desegregating schools. Rosemary and her best-friend JJ are to attend a new mixed race school and will be in the same class, but before school begins, JJ is diganosed with polio. This means Rosemary will be the only coloured person in the class. At school she has to sit by Grace the Tastless, a white local girl who torments Rosemary frequently with racial slurs.
The strength of people within Rosemary's community helps her deal with tough times and the way values are installed in Rosemary, gives the reader hope that this sixth grader will be a survivor and a leader. As the story progresses an unexpected friendship evolves between Rosemary and Grace, a "friendship for today".
