Mrs. Salvador is a very fair teacher, her rules always end with "But not in Room 204". Regina Lillian Hadwig likes the rules of this classroom very much. Unfortunately, the rules are not always followed at home. Regina's father is sexually abusing her.
Mrs. Salvador is teaching a unit on personal safety, when she discusses the issue of touching. She informs her class that often it is not a stranger who touches childen in ways they shouldn't be touched. Usually it is someone who the child knows. Mrs. Salvador reassurs her class that yes, some kids at school have had this happen to them and yes, she would know exactly what to do to help. This is the catalyst for Regina to disclose what is happening to her at home.
This was a timely reminder! Although this issues was sensitively dealt with, the message was clear without creating fear. I hope I can be like Mrs. Salvador!
