The silver donkey

I loved this book about a World War 1 soldier who, blinded and shellshocked from the fighting in France, is found hiding in the woods by two little girls. They befriend him, bringing him food and clothing, and in return he tells them stories about the little silver donkey he carries with him like a good luck charm. As days pass, and it becomes harder to keep the soldier's presence secret, they enlist their brother's aid to help the soldier get home to England. A delightful story about honesty, loyalty and courage.
