I enjoyed reading this book. The author draws you in to the story and characters easily though I'm unable to explain how. I think it may be the talented style of writing and the descriptions of character and behaviour. He is also able to hold the tension of interactions as in real life, understated as in real life.
The main character, Maggie, 13 years old is visiting her father and his second wife and her new baby. The father and stepmother are good contrasting characters. The young boy, Tucker and the heron are also contrasting characters. One is magical in Maggie's eyes, the other is needy and a threat to the heron. It is a story of unspoken need and unspoken love.
I do like stories and plots that are not predictable as this one is. It has an unfinished ending which suited the style of the story.
I recommend it for adults and teenagers.
Different cover on the NZ copy.
