The Scarecrow and His Servant by P Pullman

The language of the opening lines describing a character who "hadn't been feeling at all well" promises a mild, whimsical style as in "The Wind in the Willows" and Bertie Wooster.

The scarecrow offers Johnny the job of being his servant which he gladly accepts - Huckleberry Finn territory now! The scarecrow has "an inner conviction" which is literally a document stuffed inside him that tells him he is the owner of Spring Valley, a place unknown to both. This is the motivation for their journey.

Mean, dense, and kind characters are encountered. The birds and things communicate with the duo. The humour in the events and the characters is enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed the court scene .

There is depth in the story if you wish to analyse it. Better to savour the good writing in character and events.
