An "Amazon" adventure for the 21st Century! Isabel Allende's novel is well crafted. The reader is transported not only into a jungle setting, but also into a believable world of the imagination. Students aged 11 and older will relate well to Allende's two main characters, Alex and Nadia. Through vividly described adventures, the reader becomes involved in the intrigues and dangers of rain forest exploitation and join in Alex and Nadia's personal journey toward self belief. This is an interesting book and a worthwhile read.

Haven't read this book by Isabel Allende but have read two others written by her.
'Daughter of Fortune' set mid 19th century and 'Portrait in Sepia' set at the end of the 19th century.
Both are richly detailed in setting, character, violence and compassion. Throughout the stories, Allende probes deeply into complexities of a connected family and their hidden secrets.
Background on the author...she was born in Peru, was raised in Chile and now lives in California. Her works of fiction are written in Spanish and translated when printed. Check out the website http://www.isabelallende.com/
