This is the diary of Margaret Brady one of the survivors of the RMS Titanic. She was 14 years old at the time when she wrote her diary. The diary gives a full account of her life. The story starts off with her time at St Abernathy's Orphanage for Girls in Whitechapel-where her brother left her on the doorsteps of the orphanage, as he could not afford to keep her. Her brother William wanted to create a better life for them both and thought there were better job opportunities for him to work in the United States. In 1910, he got a job working as a cabin boy as a cabin boy on a cargo ship in the USA. There were intentions that one day Margaret would meet in the States and live with him. During her time at the orphanage, Margaret was given the opportunity to become a companion to an American lady (Mrs Carstairs) who was boarding the Titanic. She took this wonderful opportunity, as she wanted to experience life as a first class passenger on board the RMS Titanic and to meet her brother in New York. Under Mrs. Carstairs supervision, Margaret's life changed from her wardrobe to etiquette around the passengers. Throughout the text Margaret gives a detailed account of the vessel, the food, events, stewards and people she met on her journey. At the end of the diary, there is some happiness around being a survivor but there is also a lot of guilt and regret. Need I say more!!! Don't want to spoil it.
A book I couldn't put down. Glued to it right to the end. Would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history, disasters and lives of other people. Didn't know much about the Titanic prior to reading this book. A great read, learnt a lot about the interior of the Titanic and life as a first class passenger. It was interesting to read the epilogue of the text to see what happened to Margaret after this event, whether she found happiness at the end and what she did with her life later on. A moving story.
