Lin and the Red Stranger

This story takes us into the lives of the gold diggers, following issues faced by both the Chinese and others. Gave interesting insight into the goals of the Chinese--and the hardships that all the miners faced.

If you enjoyed this novel you are in luck, as Ken Catran is a prolific writer.

I particularly enjoy his sci fi and history works, but he writes across a range of genres, and levels, from upper primary to secondary.

He is has also written for the screen, and is responsible for the screenplays of several film adaptations of New Zealand children's novels.

What age would you recommend this book for?

The National Library catalogue suggests Primary and Intermediate. I am of the opinion that each student can self select with guidance and each teacher should have a good grasp of their students' reading abilities and interests so stating actual ages or levels isn't always useful.
