The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie

This is a fabulous read and my two boys (aged 11 and 15 ) loved it too.
Junior, a native American Indian quits school on his Spokane Indian Reservation and goes to an all white high school nearby to receive a better education. In doing so he faces rejection from his own community and also prejudices in his new. Faced with many obstacles he overcomes them with wit, humor and becomes a much stronger person . In this coming of age novel Junior finds the hope he is looking for - "You have to take your hope and go somewhere where other people have hope"
The book reminds us of the plight of minority people and also of young people today as they find their way in a world that is often very alien to them.
Look out and enjoy Junior's very funny and entertaining cartoon drawings.
