Alone on a wide wide sea

Michael Morpurgo is one of my favourite authors and this story about a six year old orphan boy being sent to Australia is just amazing. The story is loosely linked to the poem by Samuel Taylor Colerodge of the Ancient Mariner. As Arthur grows up into adulthood the adventures in one lifetime seemed so real I kept going back to the book cover to see if this was biographical. The story is in two parts, the first being told by Arthur and the second part being told by his daughter. The story evokes anger and tears.

I went to an address by Michael Morpurgo when he visited in 2007. He told us that the photo of the young boy on the cover of this great book was actually himself as a kid!
