Daughter of Venice - by Donna Jo Napoli

Loosely based on historical fact, an interesting story of 16th century Venice through the eyes of a young Venetian noblewoman. If you haven't had the opportunity to travel, reading stories of another culture can in some way transport you and broaden your horizons, although this era has long passed.

Sixteen year old Donata struggles against the rules set in place for nobility, few daughters in a family will marry, one will become a helper in her brother's home, the others will retire to a nunnery. One son will marry, so as not to divide family wealth, another will study, enter politics or law, and others to the priesthood or remain bachelors.

Very readable.
