My story: below the mountains

by Jean Bennett
The diary of Amy McDonald, Milford Road, 1935-6. One of the My Story series, this diary tells the story of a 14-15 year old girl who moves with her father (engineer for the road and Homer Tunnel operation) mother and younger brother, up into the wild environment and hazard of the Eglinton and Homer valleys. It is a story of life in tents, relief workers, severe mountain weather, drownings in the icy river, avalanches, Labour victory in the 1935 elections and improvements that followed. A warm recounting of a grim but frequently happy episode in our history.
