The White Darkness by Geraldine McCaughrean

If you like fantasy and can take that leap of imagination, this is a book for you. Sym travels to the Antarctic with her companion and soulmate Captain Oates.....he is in her head!Beautifully written, a book unlike others.

I loved it - I liked the way that Sym starts off hearing the voice of Titus Oates in her head and by the end of the book she has been able to regain her sanity, while her Uncle experiences the reverse -a descent into complete and utter madenss. The descriptions of the polar landscape are so vivid, that I wondered whether Geraldine McCaughrean had actually visited there in the course of her research - does anybody know?

Found a website http://www.wordmavericks.com that has an interview conducted with Geraldine McCaughrean before the book was published. She reveals she has never been to Antarctica, but now knows a lot about it.
A gripping read...can't put it down, will finish it tonight!
