The Boat by H Ward and I Andrew

A very touching story told with non-emotional language. This has a better effect than an emotional narrative.

There is a hint of Noah's Ark in this but it is about humans rather than animals. Negative attitudes and genuine care meet because of the animals and the flooding. The island man loves his creatures but not the faraway humans. He doesn't trust them.

The illustrations show wild and domestic creatures living together on the flooding island. They have learned to
live together with their own kind unlike their carer who is isolated. He can do nothing for them in the face of the storm. He is unable to see what is happening in front of him. It is not only the animals that need rescuing. The grey illustrations were a bit of a drawback for me but the effect draws the reader into the storm itself so you become part of the story.

For me the best thing about this book is the style of storytelling. Plain narrative used for powerful and emotional content.
