Holes By Louis Sachar
I loved this book! This story centers on Stanley Yelnats, a boy who always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It is this bad luck that has him ending up in Camp Green Lake, a boys' juvenile detention centre. As punishment, the boys must each dig a hole a day, five feet deep & five feet across. The warden claims that this pointless labour builds character, but Stanley must try to dig up the truth. This would be an excellent book for Year 5 & up children, and there is also a movie that is just as good. There are further books relating to the characters in this book too. A book that I just couldn't put down until I had finished.

I completely agree with these comments... a fantastic book. the only issue I had with the movie was Stanley is meant to be fat, and in the movie he's not... but can lead to good comparisons between written word and movies!
An all time favourite of mine - I've forced everyone I know to read it - even my 70 year old Dad! They've all loved it, too. Great 'read aloud' for Yr 4 up.
