Vampirates : Demons of the Ocean - Justin Somper

The year is 2505. The oceans have risen. A new era of piracy is dawning.

A vicious storm separates twins Connor and Grace Tempest, destroying their boat and leaving them fighting for their lives in the cruel, cold water.

Picked up by one of the more notorious pirate ships, Connor soon finds himself wielding a cutlass. But does he have the stomach to be a pirate?

Grace finds herself aboard a more mysterious ship. Kept under lock and key, she's assured no harm will come to her, just as long as she follows the enigmatic captain's rules....

This is not a book I would have chosen if I saw it on a shelf. How wrong I would have been! I really enjoyed this book and read it in a day. While I felt sure the twins would find each other again, their individual circumstances kept me captivated. I was 3 quarters through the book before I realised that there weren't enough pages left for everything to meet a satisfactory resolution. Somper has succeeded in setting the scene for a great series. I will now go hunting for the next installment - can't wait to see what will happen next!

There's a website but I've not yet checked it out

Hi Trudy

I enjoyed this book too - it encompasses everything that could possibly appeal to kids - vampires, pirates, boy/girl protogonists and even a touch of romance for the slightly loder readers
