Weslandia By Paul Fleischman

This book was an excellent story that will appeal to many, it starts off as a typical misfit outcast by society that does right and in the end by acting as himself and not conforming to society makes friends in his own right. I would be prepared to use this in a classroom of any age group when teaching issues such as self esteem, friendship and awareness of differences. The enjoyment gained from this book was heightened by the surroundings, I was sitting on the Beach at Russell and could put myself into explorer Wesley's shoes and pretend I was on my own little land.

I have just used this book, Weslandia with my Year 6 class. I found a video recording of it in the National Library so the children "watched" the book first before we read it. They loved the book - the illustrations, his imagination and creative ideas. Our topic at the moment is making a community and it fit really well. I highly recommend this book for class use!
