This tale chronicles the story of the "Lost Boys of Sudan". These children ranging in age from 5 - 15 years old, were casualities of a civil war with origins dating to the 1950's. A resumption of fighting in the mid 1980's forced 30 000 children to trek more than 1 000 miles to find safety. The children initially travelled from Sudan to Ethiopia, but were forced to travel back to the Sudanese border and then on to Kenya due to hostilities in their adopted country. This story chronicles their journey through the eyes of an eight year old boy, Garang.
The story is told simply, in the words of a child. I had chills as I read these sentences " When the storm of bullets passed, I ran back to my village to find my family, but everything was gone. The houses were burning and everything was destroyed."
The illustrations were arresting. The facial expressions of the characters were really haunting. It will stay with me for some time.
