" Behind the Museum Door" Selected by Lee Bennett Hopkins

This wonderful collection of poems transported me back to my primary school years! I was standing in front of the imposing Auckland Museum Doors (prior to the extensive renovations of course). The acrylic paint, oil, pastel and coloured pencil illustrations were so appropriate for this text. There was a real sense of childlike wonder communicated by them!

I was really impressed with the fantastic langauge. It was carefully selected and varied without detracting from the overall meaning. My favourite phrase was from Tales in Tapestry by Sandra Gilbert Brug " ...their fearsome deeds depicted in exquisite woven scenes."
