"Mites to Mastodons" Maxine Kumin

Do you know what the term "polliwog" means? I now do after reading this animal anthology of poems. It is the egg stage in the life cycle of the salamander, toad and frog! The poems in this collection contain accurate detail about the animal subject e.g. "by paddling so leisurely in place that algae clumps have ample time to grow along its undersides" (Manatee). These fact bytes were nicely woven into the framework of the poem. The illustrations were the drawcard of this text. The graphics looked similar to collage, with paint used for effect in some instances.

My favourite poem was "Extinct". It had the rich language I was craving for (absent in previous works) and mentioned New Zealand!
