The secrets of Sarah Byrnes by Chris Crutcher

Sarah Byrnes suffered horrific facial burns when she was three years old, supposedly because she pulled a pot of boiling spaghetti onto herself. When she is admitted to the psychiatric unit of the local hospital at age 17 in a catatonic state, her best friend Eric (an overweight boy whose nickname is Moby), tries to discover what really happened to cause those scars in order to help her get better. But he finds that Sarah’s secrets are not only terrifying, they are also dangerous, not only to Sarah but also to himself.

This story has themes of child abuse and family violence at the centre of the story, but cleverly explores teen suicide, the abortion debate, and school bullying. Highly recommended for any teenager to read.
